Meet the teacher ESL Instructor, Stephanie, in Chiba, Japan Stephanie, an ESL teacher from Maryland, began her Teach Away placement at the Berlitz Japan Inc. school in Chiba, Japan, teaching English about four months ago. We caught up with her to learn how she’s enjoying her teaching abroad experience so far, and see whether she has any advice for others who are interested in teaching in Japan. What initially interested you in teaching abroad? I've always desired the experience of living abroad in another country for cultural immersion and exploration, and also to learn more about myself, including my strengths and weaknesses. ESL seemed like an attractive option because it allows me to work directly with individuals living in Tokyo, and also exposes me to Japanese culture in a more authentic way. Why did you decide on Japan? Honestly, I was open to going to virtually anywhere around the world. My application with Berlitz moved quickly, and I accepted their offer and decided to give Japan a try! Did you have any concerns before you left? One of the major concerns I had about leaving America to teach abroad was leaving my friends behind. I had been living in D.C. for a long time, and grew comfortable there, but knew I wanted a life change. Another concern I had was about securing housing abroad before I left. This one was a challenge for me, as I had to be flexible and revise my housing situation once I got to Japan, but it all worked out in the end. Describe the school that you teach at and what a typical workday looks like for you. The school I teach at is a private language center where students attend according to their desired schedule. Class sizes are mostly small, either one-on-one or with a few students at most. This individualized or small group setting gives students more attentive teaching time and allows me to focus more individually on their learning needs. I tend to work the afternoons and late evenings during the week, and full days on the weekends. Typically, I learn who I will be teaching for the day when I arrive at the school for work, and the students vary everyday. Weekends tend to be the most busy as clients often have the most availability over those two days. What have you learned about life in Japan from your teaching experience? Japan is a country that greatly values its cultural identity, traditions, and customs. The people here are respectful, courteous, hierarchical, and disciplined. Due to small living spaces, people are economical and aware of their surroundings and how they affect them. Public transit is safe and convenient, and many people walk or bike everywhere, which is refreshing! What is youf favourite meal that you've had? I am a fan of Japanese comfort foods. I love Oyako-don, which is a traditional sweet and savory chicken, egg, and rice bowl dish. Also, freshly made ramen soup (not the freeze-dried type!) in Japan is always delicious. The noodles are slightly al dente, which makes it fun to eat and slurp. Slurping your ramen is considered good manners in Japan as it is a sign that you enjoy your food. What's your neighborhood like? I live in a quiet residential neighborhood with convenient access to the city, where I work. I'm just a quick 10 - 12 minute walk to the local subway station and everything that I need is close by. Where would you like to go next? I am open to many places. We'll see what happens! Do you have any tips for teachers who are looking to apply to teach abroad? Be flexible and adaptable regardless of where you go. In the Kumon Reading Program, he’s taking a deep dive into high school-level literature and analyzing pieces such as Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.Having been enrolled in Kumon since he was six, Abhinav has gained the confidence and motivation to help him through any challenge. He credits Kumon for helping him become a stronger student in school. “Kumon is a very inspiring and unique program,” said Abhinav. “The fact that I am ahead of my grade level has made my school work easier, especially math. This has created more free-time in my schedule, allowing me to finish other work and have time for sports. Applying what I’ve learned in Kumon at school has helped me a lot.” While he’s still undecided on a career path, he does see a future in medicine. “I want to either be a physician who specializes in sleep medicine, medical research, cardiovascular surgery, or really any career that deals with medicine. Many of the signs of an introvert could be misconstrued with “wisdom”. Signs such as enjoying time by yourself, being the last to raise your hand in a group setting, other people often asking your opinion, preferring not to engage with people who are angry or upset, not initiating small talk with salespeople or other casual meetings. These seem like very wise behaviors, and many being the kind that is cultivated by the kind of wisdom that comes with age and experience. And studies have shown that introversion does increase with age (Gutman 1966 and Heron Chown 1967). However, the correlation between age and introversion was shown to be small, though statistically significant. Which means that even if older individuals are more likely to be introverted, it does not necessarily mean that it is a result of their age. This only leads to the argument that it is a growing wisdom rather than necessarily introversion. Thus, we could argue that the indicators of aged wisdom are likely to be mistaken for introversion even if you are not. In fact, there are many aspects of aging that lead to your continued improvement and performance in the workplace. Even with the increased introversion (wisdom). Of the top 10 worries of getting old, physical ability independence was rated as the most common concern by those surveyed. As well as the mental impact of aging and the risk to your finances. With these concerns driving you, it may well fuel your ambition and work ethic. Combine this with a growing sense of introverted wisdom and you can quickly understand why they call them your “golden years.” However, for now, we will use introversion to describe the state of mind as this presents an easy frame of reference to understand the behaviors that are likely to affect your work. With that being said, let us explore the other signs of introversion that may present in an aging individual in the workplace. Understand that there are both positive and negative aspects of being an introvert at work. Introverts are more likely to be antisocial or shy, inattentive, slow or unenthusiastic. On the other hand, introverts think before they speak, they don’t patronize those beneath them and they don’t act rashly. Are you noticing any trends yet? Let us look at these positive and negative aspects of introversion from the context of being an aging employee in an increasingly young workforce. Imagine yourself (you may not have to imagine it) working at a company, perhaps an office. As someone of an older demographic, are the younger employees likely to think you antisocial or shy if you avoid their offer of beer pong? Or to go “clubbing”? Probably! But that seems more like wisdom if you take a step back. If you think before you speak (a rarity these days) and take your time to complete your work properly, are younger employees likely to believe you slow or unenthusiastic? Possibly! Though, that is how work should be done. Do it right the first time, measure twice cut once. And perhaps most obvious of all, as a senior employee, you are likely above some or many others in the hierarchy. With this position of authority, and as an introvert (or wise elder) are you likely to avoid patronizing your subordinates? Of course, because with your well-earned wisdom you can think outside of yourself. You can remember what it was like to be where they are. And you are likely to be free of the bragging and arrogant behavior younger employees who rose quickly often have. It should go without saying now that many of the effects of aging and a growing, wiser mind, may be misconstrued for a growing introversion. As you age this is likely to happen. And especially so in a workplace, where such introversion has both positive and negative aspects. It is with this understanding that you ought to embrace these aspects of yourself. Be slow, but attentive to your work. Think before you speak, because others will not. And reserve your social time for those things that are of true value to you. Either in the workplace or outside of it. Your time is valuable and increasingly so. Turn the negative aspects of introversion into strengths in the workplace.
